Taegeuk Oh Jang, the fifth form in the Taegeuk series, embodies the energy of the trigram
Seon (☴), symbolizing wind — gentle yet powerful, capable of steady flow or sudden gusts.
Movements in this form alternate between smooth transitions and explosive strikes, demonstrating the adaptability of controlled force.
Steps
- Start in ready stance (Joon-bi).
- Step left 90° into left front stance → left low block.
Chamber left fist under right armpit while raising right arm bent upward to aim.
- Pull left foot back, pivot right (maintain walking stance facing forward) → left hammerfist strike downward from a high arc.
- Step forward with right foot into right front stance → right low block.
Chamber right fist under left armpit while raising left arm bent upward to aim.
- Pull right foot back, pivot left (walking stance forward) → right hammerfist strike downward from a high arc.
- Step forward with left foot into left front stance → left inward block.
Chamber right arm to side, right arm aimed forward in preparation.
- Without stepping or pausing → right inward block.
- Right front kick → during descent chamber right fist beneath left armpit → land in right front stance → right backfist strike.
- Chamber left arm to the side (right arm aimed forward). Without stepping → left inward block.
- Left front kick → chamber left fist beneath right armpit → land in left front stance → left backfist strike.
- Chamber right arm to the side (left arm aimed forward). Without stepping → right inward block.
- Step forward with right foot into right front stance → right backfist strike.
- Chamber left knifehand palm-up to right-side waist and right fist palm-up to left shoulder.
- Step forward with left foot into left front stance → left low block.
- Chamber right arm to side (left arm aimed forward) → without stepping → right inward block.
- Right front kick → chamber right fist beneath left armpit during descent → hop forward landing in rear cross stance (left foot behind right) → right backfist strike to nose → loud “Kihap!”
- When the instructor calls “Bah Ro,” turn and face forward, returning to ready stance (Joon-bi).
Taegeuk Oh Jang expresses Wind (Seon ☴) — steady yet changeable.
The practitioner should alternate between flowing control and sharp power, maintaining rhythm and balance while ending exactly on the starting point.
