Taegeuk Yuk Jang
Taegeuk Yuk Jang (also called Taegeuk Yook Jang) is the sixth form in the Taegeuk series, practiced by 3rd Gup students in World Taekwondo (WT) style.
It is associated with the trigram Gam (☵), symbolizing water—flowing, adaptable, yet powerful and relentless.
The form emphasizes smooth, continuous motion with soft transitions and decisive strikes, reflecting how water wears away stone through persistence.
Opening Movements
- Begin in ready stance (Joon-bi).
- Turn left 90° into a left front stance → left low block.
- Right front kick → step back into a left back stance → left outside block (simultaneous action).
- Turn right 180° into right front stance → right low block.
- Left front kick → step back into right back stance → right outside block.
- Turn left 90° into left front stance → right knifehand high block.
- Right roundhouse kick → place right leg down just ahead of the left foot.
Middle Sequence
- Turn left 90° into left front stance → left outside block → right middle punch.
- Right front kick → land in right front stance → left middle punch.
- Turn 180° into right front stance → right outside block → left middle punch.
- Left front kick → land in left front stance → right middle punch.
- Turn left 90° into ready stance → cross both hands overhead → slow double low block.
Final Phase
- Step forward into right front stance → left knifehand high block.
- Left roundhouse kick → land with “Kihap!”.
- Place kicking foot next to right → turn right 270° → right front stance → right low block.
- Left front kick → step back into right back stance → right outside block.
- Turn left 180° → left front stance → left low block.
- Right front kick → step back into left back stance → left outside block.
Closing Movements
- Move right foot → turn left 90° → left back stance → double knifehand middle block.
- Step back into right back stance → double knifehand middle block.
- Step back into left front stance → left palm middle block → right middle punch.
- Step back into right front stance → right palm middle block → left middle punch.
- Command “Bah Ro” → move right foot back to align with left → return to ready stance (Joon-bi).
Taegeuk Yuk Jang highlights the nature of water (Gam ☵)—steady, adaptable, and patient.
Flow continuously, avoid stiffness, and maintain even rhythm.
This poomsae is one of two that repeat the first line on the third line and one of the few that concludes without a Kihap.
