Taegeuk Chil Jang
Taegeuk Chil Jang, known as the Mountain Form, is practiced by 2nd Geup (low red belt) students in World Taekwondo (WT) Taekwondo.
It consists of 25 movements including 4 kicks, 1 punch, and 1 Kihap.
The form is associated with the trigram Kan (☶), symbolizing the mountain — stability, stillness, and internal strength.
Opening Sequence
- Begin in ready stance (Joon-bi).
- Turn left into left tiger stance → right palm-down strike.
- Right front kick → return to left back stance → left reverse inside block.
- Turn right into right tiger stance → left palm-down block → left front kick → right reverse inside block in right back stance.
- Transition to left back stance → double knifehand low block.
Knifehand and Backfist Series
- Step forward into right back stance → double knifehand low block.
- Turn left into left tiger stance → right palm-down block (left palm under right elbow) → right reverse backfist strike.
- Turn right into right tiger stance → left palm-down block → left backfist strike.
Transition and Combination Blocks
- Bring both hands to chest (right fist in left palm), extend forward, then return to chamber position.
- Step forward into left front stance → right low block + simultaneous left inside block.
- Mirror to right front stance → left low block + right inside block.
- Turn 270° left into left front stance → double middle outside block (as if breaking a grip on the neck or shoulders).
Knee Strike and Uppercut Series
- Reach up as if grabbing an opponent’s head → bring hands down while raising right knee for a knee strike.
- Hop forward landing on right foot (left foot crossed behind) → double uppercut (palm-up) to opponent’s ribs.
- Move left foot back into right front stance → double crossed low block.
- Turn right 180° into right front stance → double outside block.
- Repeat with left knee strike → hop forward → double uppercut.
- Move right foot back into left front stance → double crossed low block.
Closing Power Sequence
- Step back with left foot into side walking stance → left backfist strike.
- Right open-fist face kick → step into horse stance → right elbow strike (left palm contact).
- Right backfist strike → left open-fist face kick → left elbow strike landing in horse stance.
- Left knifehand block (remain in horse stance).
- Step up into horse stance → right side punch with Kihap!
- Return left leg to starting position → face master → ready stance (Joon-bi).
Taegeuk Chil Jang expresses the principle of the mountain (Kan ☶)—immovable and grounded.
Movements should project strength without unnecessary motion, emphasizing controlled pauses, solid stances, and inner calm between bursts of force.
